Adding YouTube videos to PowerPoint
I was asked how to add a YouTube video to a PowerPoint slide, and thought it would be a good idea to share the simple solution more widely.
- Find the video you want to use on YouTube
- Click the Share link beneath the video and then click Copy
- In PowerPoint, add a blank slide to contain the video and then select Video > Online Video from the Insert menu. Click in the box that says Search YouTube, press Ctrl-V to paste the link and press Enter on your keyboard.
- Your video appears on the slide. You can reposition it and resize it by dragging the corner handles. You will only see the video play when you are in presentation mode, so you should check now to make sure it works as planned.
- The YouTube video controls (play, pause, drag slider to fast forward or rewind) work as normal.
- Simply click on the slide outside the video to stop it and move to the next slide.
But what if you only want to show part of the video – perhaps starting at 2 minutes 35 seconds in? For this you will need the YouTube embed code and follow a slightly different procedure:
- Find the video you want to use on YouTube
- Drag the slider beneath the video to quickly find the approximate start point and then play the video to fine tune that.
- Pause the video at the desired start point.
- Click the Share link beneath the video, and tick the Start checkbox – it automatically selects the current time (minutes:seconds)
- Click the Embed link and select the options shown below. Click Copy to copy the embed code to your clipboard. If you can’t see the Copy button, make your browser narrower than full-screen width to show it – sorry, its a YouTube glitch!
- In PowerPoint, add a blank slide to contain the video and then select Video > Online Video from the Insert menu. This time, click in the box that says ‘Paste embed code here’, press Ctrl-V to paste the code and press Enter on your keyboard.
- A black box appears on the slide – this is your video. As before you can reposition it and resize it by dragging the corner handles. You will only see the video play when you are in presentation mode, so you should check now to make sure it works as planned.
